Abu Dhabi, UAE – 21 July 2023: Nawah Energy Company (Nawah), the Joint Venture nuclear operations and maintenance subsidiary of the Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC), has announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Toshiba Energy Systems and Solutions Corporation (Toshiba ESS). The agreement will focus on advancing collaboration in achieving industrial development, maintenance management, supplier diversification, and carbon neutrality.
The MoU was signed in Abu Dhabi by Saleh Al Shehhi, Chief Operations Officer of Nawah and Tadasu Yotsuyanagi, President and CEO of Toshiba ESS. The purpose of the framework agreement includes identifying future opportunities for collaboration to accelerate the clean energy transition. Japan and the UAE have both pledged climate commitments to reach Net Zero by 2050 with nuclear energy being integral in proactive efforts to ensure global energy security and address climate change issues.
As part of the wider corporation’s strategic growth plans, ENEC is focused on R&D for advanced nuclear technology, exploring and incubating strategic investments in nuclear energy locally and internationally. This aligns with the UAE’s growth and development goals for the sector and supports the national energy strategy and diversification plans.
Nawah is pursuing plans to diversify the supply chain and enhance secured operations of the Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant. Toshiba ESS will lend its capabilities to support these plans and will consider opportunities to enable the ongoing stable operations of the Plant.
The Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant presently has three commercially operating reactors, with the fourth in the operational readiness phase. The Plant is a catalyst for innovation in the clean energy transition, including the development of SMRs and next generation reactors.
