The Barakah Nuclear Power Plant will use the most advanced nuclear technology, ensuring safety and efficiency throughout the process of power production. The reactor is Korean-made and is named the Advanced Power Reactor 1400 (APR-1400). It is a 1,400 Megawatt Pressurized Water Reactor (PWR) designed by the Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO), and meets the highest international standards set for safety and performance. The Unit 1 reactor at Barakah will be the fifth of its kind in the world with the first four APR-1400 units located in South Korea.
The APR-1400 meets the latest safety criteria set by the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (US NRC) for the development of new plants, and has been enhanced at Barakah to fulfil the latest requirements for earthquake safety and aircraft impact resistance.
Ultimately, the design of the APR-1400 ensures that any incident that cannot be prevented will be effectively contained on site.
